The reality of Imposter Syndrome in the tech world 2

Growing despite all odds

In my last post, The reality of the imposter syndrome , I revealed a problem that a good number of newbies to the tech space face - The feeling of incompetence, the depression, the subtle, but loud cry for help. After all that has been said and all the pain endured, the question is — does it end there? Do you want to be stuck in that stage forever? Do you want to grow? Or do you want to remain sad and live the rest of your life in regret?

The answer is, No! We all want the best for ourselves, and self pity is definitely not the path to it. You have to wipe away your tears. Push out, as difficult as it is, all negative thoughts and emotions. Get help if need be.

The first step to progress would be to audit the kind of company you keep. Your company influences you more seriously than you could imagine. A change or a reshuffling might be necessary. Surround yourself with friends with whom you can grow together, and mentors you can understudy. Think about how they got to the level they are and try to estimate the amount of effort they must have put in. You would realize that there is no growth without sacrifice. Learn from them, take on the challenge, and with time you will see yourself at the peak.

It is important to know that this doesn't happen overnight. Take baby steps, don't push too hard, move at your pace, be proud of the little things you do, be happy with and love your work but most importantly, love yourself.

Sometimes, you might get overwhelmed with emotions and feel like crying. It’s ok. Things don’t always have to go your way. Stop! Take a break, eat your favourite food, read your favorite book, watch your favorite movie; then start again. A time is coming and it is closer than you think, it is when you will become the developer you want to be and the rest will be history!!!

Surround yourself with people that encourage you, love you, and tell you the truth. Communities that would make you feel safe and treat you with respect. See every developer success as a beautiful thing to be celebrated and with the time you will get there and surpass too. Learn to be open and honest. Make friends, you don’t know whose insight or help would be the assist you need in your journey.

Lastly, have fun. You thrive when you do the things you love. Learn to love to code; love your craft. If coding causes more pain than good, there is nothing wrong with finding something else you would love. I really want you to be truly happy. I want you to smile even while debugging. I want to see you at the top no matter what. I want to be proud of us!!!
